Effects of compliant coatings on radiated sound from a rigid-wall turbulent boundary layer

چکیده

A theoretical model is developed to investigate the effect of compliant coatings on radiated sound from low Mach-number turbulent boundary layers over otherwise rigid surfaces. Lighthill’s analogy is employed and the primary noise source is assumed to be from wall-pressure fluctuations. Parametric studies are performed on the behavior of the material properties such as the speed of sound and density of compliant coatings. Comparisons are made between the results from coated and uncoated rigid walls. At low frequencies, compliant coatings are not effective for noise reduction. At high frequencies, coating materials with low speed of sound and low density provide significant noise reduction. r 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. rs n l c op y

Effects of flexible walls on radiated sound from a turbulent boundary layer

In this paper, radiated sound from low Mach number turbulent boundary layers is studied using Lighthill’s analogy. The focus is on investigating the behavior of wall pressure fluctuations on a flexible wall boundary. Comparisons are made between the results from rigid and flexible walls. At low frequencies, the flexible wall results have shown much higher levels of power spectra. At high freque...

Compliant Coatings: a Decade of Progress

This brief article reviews the important developments in the field of compliant coatings that took place in the past ten years. During this period progress in theoretical and computational methods somewhat outpaced that in experimental efforts. There is no doubt that compliant coatings can be designed to delay transition and to suppress noise on marine vehicles as well as other practical hydrod...

Large-eddy simulation of turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubes submerged in an emulated atmospheric boundary-layer

Turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubic obstacles has been numerically investigated using large-eddy simulation. The simulations have been performed using high-performance computations with local cluster systems. The array of cubes are fully submerged in a simulated deep rough-wall atmospheric boundary-layer with high turbulence intensity characteristics of environmental turbulent fl...

Study of Pulsatile Non-Newtonian Blood Flow Through Abdominal Aorta and Renal Arteries Incorporating Fluid- Structure Interaction

Background: The interaction between the blood and the vessel wall is of great clinical interest in studying cardiovascular diseases, the major causes of death in developed countries. Objective: To understand the effects of incorporating fluid-structure interaction into the simulation of blood flow through an anatomically realistic model of abdominal aorta and renal arteries reconstructed from CT...

Effects of coupling on turbulent gas-particle boundary layer flows at borderline volume fractions using kinetic theory

This study is concerned with the prediction of particles’ velocity in a dilute turbulent gas-solidboundary layer flow using a fully Eulerian two-fluid model. The closures required for equationsdescribing the particulate phase are derived from the kinetic theory of granular flows. Gas phaseturbulence is modeled by one-equation model and solid phase turbulence by MLH theory. Resultsof one-way and...
